putting ourselves out there
Posting a few fliers seems like a small thing, just to let people know who and where we are. But it prompts the periodic question of identity. Who would like it here? For whom is this fellowship a good fit? Why do people “go to church” on Sundays? I don’t always feel like I know the answers to these questions. I am not a publicity person, and self-doubt easily slips in.
I start looking at our website; wow, it needs updating. When I google “inclusive churches” in Champaign, we don’t make the first page. I can easily become discouraged if I look at other churches’ websites or focus on what we lack.
Oh how good to be together
in this weary world we trod
What a gift and what a treasure;
kindred in the house of God
Laurie sent me the lead sheet for a new song we’ll learn Sunday. Ah, now I remember. This is why we gather to sing, and pray, and listen to teachings on scripture. Likely there are folks out there also looking for this experience.
Oh the joy, oh the sweetness,
to be gathered in the name of the Lord
Evermore, God will keep us,
from the valley to the golden shore
I am reminded that it’s not about me. Or a great poster. Or a wonderful website. We have no perfect product to promote. We do have good news though- that we are all invited to be part of God’s forever family, inclusive of each person who wants to participate in the kingdom work of love, mercy, and justice.
God called all of you through our good news so you could possess the honor of our Lord Jesus the Messiah. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the traditions we taught you…. 2 Thessalonians 2:14-15a
I think about the traditions of NCF that continue to serve this community. I don’t know what the future holds for this fellowship, only that we desire to be faithful to our calling. And in that, we are encouraged by the message to the church in Thessaloniki: (2:16-17)
Our Lord Jesus the Messiah himself and God our Father loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and a good hope. May he encourage your hearts and give you strength in every good thing you do or say. Amen.
