Election Day

Today we pray. For peace, justice, and mercy. I encourage you to listen (again) to Marty Shupack’s prayer from Sunday’s service for the election. Reminding me of the twelve representatives who each took a stone from the Jordan River to contribute to the collective memorial, pastors and faith leaders of the executive team of the Interfaith Alliance of Champaign County share the following statement:

Every Vote is Sacred – As clergy and faith leaders in Champaign County, we know firsthand the uncertainty and anxiety people are feeling in this election season. As people of faith, we believe every person’s inherent dignity entitles them to representation within our democracy.  Every vote is sacred.  Every vote must be counted, and it is worth waiting for.  Election officials must fulfill their responsibility to count every vote.  Politicians and the media must resist the temptation to prematurely declare the winner before our votes are counted.  Whether you are Black, Brown, Native, Asian, or White, regardless of political affiliation, we all have a right to a say in our government.  Counting every vote is a matter of justice.

The NCF Leadership Team also supported my signing as a faith leader a letter to SCOTUS, encouraging them to uphold the legitimacy of the election by ensuring that every vote is counted.

May we love God with all that we are, and love our neighbors- near and far- as ourselves.
