Family Fund
There were no needy persons among them. Acts 4:34a
Like the early church, New Covenant endeavored from its beginnings to live out the ideal of meeting each other’s basic necessities. If a member of our fellowship needs assistance with rent or a utility payment or an unexpected bill, we want to participate in meeting this lack through our giving. The Family Fund- and the small committee that administers it- was created to help when crises arise for us or someone close to us, where one-time assistance can stabilize a situation.
Those who owned properties or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds from the sales, and place them in the care and under the authority of the apostles. Then it was distributed to anyone who was in need. Acts 4:34b-35 (CEB)
Money for the Family Fund comes from a line item in the NCF budget, individual donations from anyone who wants to support this ministry (whether or not they attend NCF), and from limited matching grants from Everence. Donations are tax-deductible (addressed to New Covenant with the memo: Family Fund) and are paid directly to meet the shortfall- to the landlord, utility company, or other billing entity. Together, our small contributions can make a big difference in the lives of our extended family.
Family Fund members carefully and prayerfully consider requests based on each individual situation. Will our small contribution make a difference for this individual? What other resources beyond ourselves might be of assistance? We strive to be wise and generous stewards, helping when we can and referring to other agencies when we can’t. Time is often of the essence, as folks try to make ends meet on their own before coming to us when deadlines and late fees approach. Therefore, our discussions and decisions are usually made over email, while taking care to protect confidentiality.
Does the idea of helping to meet the practical needs of our fellowship and extended family excite you? Are you good at confidentiality and adept at email? Do you have a heart for helping in this way- either financially or as part of the Family Fund committee? If this sounds like an area in which you would like to serve, please let us know. We would love to add new people and perspectives to this ministry team. If you are in a tight spot and need assistance paying a bill, please contact any member of the Family Fund (Barb P, Nancy M, Judy H, Lehman W, Renee A.)
We continue to be inspired by the example of the early church, even two thousand years later in a very different context. This kind of sharing and unity was counter-cultural then and is still a witness of a different Way today.
The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, “This is mine!” about any of their possessions, but held everything in common. The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all. Acts 4:32-33 (CEB)
May we continue to pursue a common fellowship, joined in heart and mind, in recognition that all we have comes from God to meet the needs of our extended family. May our demonstrated love for one another- in word and in action- bear witness to the grace of our Lord Jesus alive and at work in our midst. -Renée
